A brief history of the cassette tape
Not sure what cassettes are? No worries! We can fill you in on just HOW we got here in the first place...
1963: Philips, a Dutch electronics company, introduces the compact cassette. The original idea was to create a small, easy-to-use format for recording voice messages and personal notes, but it quickly gained popularity in households across the globe as a method for releasing music!
1965: The first commercial music cassette is released. By the late 1960s, they became incredibly popular among consumers for their portability and ease of use. This was a major shift from cumbersome reel-to-reel tapes.
1970s: Cassette players and recorders become widely available, and the format gains traction among consumers and artists alike. The introduction of the Walkman by Sony in 1979 revolutionised the way people listen to music, making it possible to take music on the go. Not only does the compact size prove popular with music lovers, but the format becomes popular with revolutionary movements in countries like Iran and Chile, and also smugglers running banned materials behind the Iron Curtain!
1980s: The cassette tape reaches peak popularity. It becomes the dominant format for music distribution, with record labels producing albums and singles in cassette form. This decade also saw the rise of high-fidelity cassette formats, such as the Type II and Type IV tapes, which offer improved sound quality.
1990s: The cassette tape starts to decline in popularity with the advent of CDs (Compact Discs), which offer better sound quality and durability.
2000s: Cassette tapes become largely obsolete with the rise of digital music formats, including MP3s and streaming services. Whilst the cassette tape was once a pioneer of portability and ease of use, the Internet age has taken over well and truly!
The Present Day: The cassette tape experiences a cultural revival at the merch table! Consumer trends have seen it become a musical zeitgeist once more. New releases, limited edition albums, and even some independent artists are embracing the format as a unique selling point. Nostalgia is a big hit with fans, and hey... We're suckers for nostalgia too!
